Alstom has secured a significant contract worth EUR 69 million (USD 114 million) as part of a larger EUR 214 million (USD 354 million) framework to implement the European Train Control System (ETCS) in Queensland. This initiative is part of The Wave program, aimed at modernizing the state's rail infrastructure ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The ETCS Level 2 digital signaling system will be installed on Section 1 North of the new Sunshine Coast Line. This upgrade is expected to enhance the capacity, safety, and reliability of Queensland's rail network, which is crucial for accommodating the anticipated increase in passenger traffic during the Olympics.
Alstom's role includes designing, supplying, testing, and commissioning the ETCS system, along with integrating a 5G digital radio system provided by a third party. This integration is vital for ensuring seamless communication and operational efficiency across the rail network.
Guillaume Tritter, Managing Director of Alstom Australia and New Zealand, emphasized the importance of this project in transforming Queensland's rail network. He stated that the combination of proven ETCS technology and Alstom's local presence will contribute to a safer and more efficient transport system.
Section 1 North is a strategic investment for southeastern Queensland, aimed at increasing network capacity and improving service reliability on one of the region's busiest rail corridors. The ETCS system will be implemented on both new infrastructure and existing lines, requiring careful planning to avoid disruptions to passenger services.
Beyond technological advancements, the project is set to generate local economic and social benefits. Alstom plans to establish the Queensland Mobility Supply Chain Centre of Excellence, focusing on skills development and enhancing the local supply chain in the mobility sector. This initiative will support job creation through apprenticeship programs, internships, and partnerships with schools and universities, fostering the development of the next generation of railway specialists.
