Athens Metro Trainset Modernised by CAF
Signal
CAF completed refurbishment of the first of 14 MAN/Siemens trainsets for Athens metro Line 1.
Impact
positiveThe refurbishment impacts STASY, the operator of Athens metro, and CAF, enhancing service reliability and extending the lifespan of aging trainsets.
CAF has successfully completed the refurbishment of the first of 14 MAN/Siemens trainsets originally built between 1983 and 1985, which are now modernised for continued operation on Athens metro Line 1. This refurbishment is part of a €70 million contract awarded by STASY, the operator of the Athens metro system, in 2022. This contract marked a significant entry for CAF into the Greek rail market, showcasing its capabilities in modernising older rolling stock.
The modernisation process includes upgrades to the DC traction equipment, which is crucial for improving the efficiency and reliability of the trainsets. By refurbishing these older units, STASY aims to enhance the overall passenger experience on Line 1, which is one of the busiest lines in the Athens metro network.
With the completion of this first trainset, STASY can now evaluate the performance improvements and passenger feedback before proceeding with the refurbishment of the remaining 13 units. This phased approach allows for adjustments based on real-world performance, ensuring that the final modernised fleet meets operational needs and passenger expectations.
The refurbishment not only extends the operational life of these trainsets but also aligns with broader sustainability goals by reducing the need for new train purchases. This is particularly relevant in the context of rising costs and supply chain challenges affecting the rail industry globally.
As CAF continues its work on the remaining trainsets, the successful completion of this project could lead to further opportunities for the company in Greece and potentially in other markets looking to modernise their rail fleets.
