Australia’s Largest New Intermodal Terminal Kicks Off Operations

The Port of Melbourne has launched the new Melbourne Intermodal Terminal (MIT) as a key element in an incentive program aimed at increasing the transfer of containerised freight from road to rail. The terminal, designed, constructed, and operated by the Intermodal Terminal Company (ITC), began freight train services in November 2023.

With an investment of $400 million, the MIT is now recognized as the largest intermodal terminal currently operating in Australia. This facility is expected to play a significant role in enhancing the efficiency of freight transport in the region.

The MIT’s strategic location and advanced infrastructure are intended to facilitate smoother logistics operations, thereby supporting the broader goals of the Port of Melbourne to optimize freight movement. The terminal is equipped to handle a substantial volume of container traffic, which is crucial for meeting the growing demands of the supply chain.

ITC’s management has emphasized the importance of this terminal in promoting sustainable transport solutions. By shifting more freight to rail, the MIT aims to reduce road congestion and lower carbon emissions associated with freight transport.

As part of the incentive program, stakeholders are encouraged to utilize the MIT for their logistics needs, which is expected to drive further growth in rail freight operations across the region. The terminal’s opening marks a significant milestone in Australia’s intermodal transport capabilities.
