Austria Celebrates Koralm High-Speed Line Opening for Passengers After 27 Years of Construction

After 27 years of construction, Austria’s Koralm Railway has officially opened for passenger service, marking a significant milestone in the country’s rail infrastructure development.

The Koralm Railway, which connects the cities of Graz and Klagenfurt, is designed to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times across the region. The new line is expected to facilitate faster and more efficient rail travel, contributing to the overall improvement of Austria’s public transport system.

Construction of the Koralm Railway began in 1996, with various phases of development taking place over the years. The project faced numerous challenges, including geological issues and funding delays, which extended the timeline significantly.

The completed line features advanced technology and modern safety systems, ensuring a high standard of service for passengers. The Koralm Railway is expected to accommodate up to 10 million passengers annually, significantly boosting regional transport capacity.

In addition to improving passenger services, the Koralm Railway is anticipated to have a positive impact on local economies by enhancing accessibility to key urban centers and promoting tourism.

Officials from the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and local government representatives attended the opening ceremony, highlighting the importance of the project for the future of rail travel in Austria.

The Koralm Railway is part of a broader initiative to modernize and expand Austria’s rail network, aligning with European Union goals for sustainable transport and reduced carbon emissions.
