Belgium’s SNCB opens 5th new train workshop facility as part of €1.4bn modernisation plan
Belgium’s state-owned railway operator SNCB has officially inaugurated a new €47 million maintenance hall at its traction workshop in Ostend. This marks the fifth new maintenance facility opened by SNCB as part of its broader €1.4 billion modernisation plan aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of its rail services.
The new maintenance hall is designed to accommodate the latest generation of trains, including the Bombardier Talent and the Alstom Coradia trains. This facility will enable SNCB to perform more comprehensive maintenance and repairs, thereby reducing downtime and improving service availability.
Construction of the Ostend maintenance hall began in 2021 and was completed in late 2023. The facility is equipped with advanced technology and tools that will streamline maintenance processes and support the operator’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
In addition to the new maintenance hall in Ostend, SNCB has previously opened similar facilities in locations including Brussels, Antwerp, and Liège. These investments are part of a strategic initiative to modernise the railway infrastructure and enhance operational capabilities across the network.
SNCB’s modernisation plan is expected to significantly improve the overall performance of the rail network, with a focus on increasing capacity, reducing travel times, and enhancing passenger comfort. The operator aims to position itself as a leader in sustainable rail transport in Europe.
As part of this initiative, SNCB is also investing in new rolling stock and upgrading existing trains to meet evolving passenger needs and environmental standards. The overall goal is to create a more efficient and customer-friendly rail service that can compete effectively with other modes of transport.
The inauguration of the Ostend facility underscores SNCB’s commitment to investing in the future of rail transport in Belgium, ensuring that it remains a vital component of the country’s transportation infrastructure.
