Czech Railways launches tenders for up to 120 battery-electric trains

Czech Railways (České dráhy) has initiated two public tenders to procure up to 120 battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) for regional passenger services. This move is part of the company’s strategy to enhance its fleet with more environmentally friendly options.

The tenders are aimed at acquiring BEMUs that will operate on various regional routes, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and improving the overall efficiency of rail transport in the Czech Republic. The introduction of battery-electric trains aligns with broader European Union goals for sustainable transport solutions.

Czech Railways has specified that the new trains should be capable of operating on non-electrified lines, which will allow for greater flexibility in service provision. The procurement process is expected to attract interest from several manufacturers specializing in battery-electric technology.

The first tender focuses on the delivery of the trains, while the second involves the maintenance and servicing of the fleet over a specified period. The company has set a timeline for the submission of bids, with the evaluation process anticipated to begin shortly thereafter.

As part of its commitment to modernization, Czech Railways is also exploring additional investments in infrastructure to support the integration of battery-electric trains into its operations. This includes potential upgrades to charging stations and other necessary facilities.

The successful bidders will be expected to deliver the first units within a defined timeframe, with the overall goal of having the new trains operational in the coming years. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards enhancing regional connectivity and promoting sustainable travel options in the Czech Republic.
