EU Commits €134 Million to Modernise Serbia-Bulgaria Rail Link
The European Union (EU) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have announced a commitment of €134 million to modernise the Niš-Dimitrovgrad railway in Serbia. This railway segment is a crucial part of ‘Corridor X’, which connects Serbia to Bulgaria.
The funding aims to enhance the infrastructure of the railway, improving both passenger and freight transport efficiency. The project is expected to facilitate better connectivity between Serbia and Bulgaria, thereby promoting regional trade and economic development.
The Niš-Dimitrovgrad railway is a vital link in the broader European transport network, contributing to the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU transport system. The modernisation efforts will include upgrading tracks, signaling systems, and station facilities.
According to the EIB, the investment aligns with the EU’s broader strategy to enhance transport infrastructure in the region, which is essential for fostering economic growth and stability. The project is also expected to reduce travel times and improve safety standards on this route.
The funding is part of a larger initiative to support infrastructure projects in the Western Balkans, with the EU aiming to invest significantly in transport and energy sectors across the region. This investment is seen as a step towards achieving a more interconnected and efficient transport network.
The modernisation of the Niš-Dimitrovgrad railway is expected to commence in the coming months, with completion targeted for 2025. Stakeholders from both Serbia and Bulgaria are optimistic about the potential benefits of this project for cross-border trade and passenger travel.
