Eurotunnel launches Channel ETCS upgrade with new on-board signalling for LeShuttle locos

Eurotunnel has selected Compagnie des Signaux – CSEE, part of the MERMEC Group, to deliver the first phase of a project to modernise rail signalling in the Channel Tunnel. This initiative aims to enhance the European Train Control System (ETCS) for LeShuttle locomotives, which operate between the UK and France.

The project will involve the installation of new on-board signalling technology, which is expected to improve safety and operational efficiency. The upgrade is part of a broader effort to align with European rail standards and enhance interoperability across the rail network.

Compagnie des Signaux will provide the necessary equipment and expertise to implement this upgrade. The first phase is set to commence in early 2024, with a focus on integrating the new signalling systems into existing LeShuttle operations.

Eurotunnel has emphasized the importance of this upgrade in maintaining the reliability of services through the Channel Tunnel. The project is anticipated to facilitate smoother operations and reduce delays, benefiting both freight and passenger services.

As part of the upgrade, Eurotunnel will also conduct extensive testing to ensure that the new systems meet all regulatory requirements and performance standards. This testing phase is crucial for the successful deployment of the ETCS technology.

Further details regarding the timeline and specific milestones for the project are expected to be released as the implementation progresses. Stakeholders in the rail industry are closely monitoring this development, given its potential impact on cross-border rail operations.
