FS Targets Channel Tunnel Launch Despite Setbacks

Italy’s state-owned rail group Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) is advancing its plans to launch high-speed rail services between Paris and London. This initiative comes despite FS losing access to Temple Mills, the maintenance depot in East London, last autumn.

FS aims to introduce its services in 2025, one year ahead of Virgin Trains’ planned launch. The company is focusing on providing competitive travel options for passengers between the two major cities.

In preparation for this launch, FS has been investing in its fleet and infrastructure. The company plans to utilize its new ETR 1000 high-speed trains, which are designed for efficiency and passenger comfort. These trains are capable of reaching speeds up to 300 km/h (186 mph).

Despite the setback at Temple Mills, FS is exploring alternative arrangements for train maintenance and operations. The company is in discussions with various stakeholders to secure necessary facilities that will support its service launch.

FS’s entry into the Channel Tunnel market is expected to intensify competition with existing operators, including Eurostar and Virgin Trains. The company is confident that its competitive pricing and service offerings will attract a significant share of the market.

As FS continues to develop its strategy, it remains committed to enhancing rail connectivity between Italy, France, and the UK. The company’s expansion into the UK market aligns with its broader goal of increasing international rail services.
