Green Cargo to connect Stegra’s steel plant to Swedish ports

Signal

Green Cargo will manage freight flows between Stegra’s upcoming steel plant in Boden and ports including Luleå, Skellefteå, and Umeå starting in 2027.

Impact

positive

Green Cargo will enhance logistics for Stegra and LKAB, facilitating raw material supply and finished product distribution, which could improve operational efficiency and reduce reliance on imports.

Green Cargo has secured a contract to manage freight logistics for Stegra’s new steel production facility in Boden, Sweden, which is set to commence operations in early 2027. This partnership will facilitate the movement of raw materials and finished products between the plant and several key ports on the Swedish east coast, including Luleå, Skellefteå, and Umeå.

The decision by Stegra, formerly known as H2 Green Steel, to collaborate with Green Cargo reflects a strategic move to optimize supply chain logistics for its operations. The steel plant will occupy over 270 hectares within the Boden Industrial Park, a 550-hectare area designed to support low-emission heavy industries. This facility will not only produce steel but also feature the largest battery pack in the Nordic region and zones for food production utilizing surplus heat.

Rail freight will play a crucial role in connecting the plant to the iron ore mines owned by LKAB, Europe’s largest iron ore producer. Initially, LKAB hesitated to supply ore to Stegra due to overcapacity issues along the Iron Ore Line (Malmbanan). However, recent upgrades to the line and delays in the plant's opening have led to a change in LKAB’s stance, allowing Stegra to source ore locally rather than relying on imports from Canada and Brazil.

This development is significant for both Green Cargo and LKAB. For Green Cargo, managing freight for a major industrial player like Stegra enhances its portfolio and strengthens its position in the rail logistics market. For LKAB, securing a local customer reduces the pressure on its existing infrastructure and ensures a steady demand for its iron ore.

The collaboration between these entities is expected to streamline operations and improve the overall efficiency of the supply chain in the region. As the Boden Industrial Park develops, it will likely attract further investments and partnerships, bolstering the local economy and promoting sustainable industrial practices.
