GSM-R Outage Disrupts German Rail Freight Operations

Signal

A nationwide outage of the GSM-R rail communication system in Germany occurred from 23:31 on June 23 to 00:30 on June 24, halting all freight trains.

Impact

negative

Rail operators like METRANS and logistics companies will face operational disruptions, leading to delays in freight deliveries and potential financial losses due to disrupted supply chains.

On June 24, 2026, Germany experienced a significant disruption in its rail freight operations due to a nationwide outage of the GSM-R communication system. The outage occurred between 23:31 and 00:30, halting all freight trains across the country, as reported by rail operator METRANS. This incident is expected to have lasting effects on logistics chains, with the rail freight association Die Güterbahnen indicating that the repercussions could last for days.

Managing Director of Die Güterbahnen, Neele Wesseln, stated that while some trains resumed operations shortly after midnight, approximately half of the freight trains remained at a standstill. This is particularly concerning as freight trains predominantly operate during the night, making them especially vulnerable to such disruptions. The halted trains are scattered across Germany and at its borders, complicating the recovery process.

The outage was attributed to a scheduled technical component replacement, according to Philipp Nagl, CEO of the German rail infrastructure manager DB InfraGO. He emphasized that the organization is prioritizing an analysis of the disruption's exact cause and has apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused.

Disruptions like this are particularly detrimental to rail freight operations, which rely on tightly scheduled cycles. The German association highlighted that a single stranded train can disrupt the entire logistics chain, as trains are expected to transport goods from one location to another and immediately pick up new cargo. The cascading effect of such delays can lead to significant operational challenges for rail operators and logistics companies alike.

This incident marks the second nationwide disruption in Germany within a short timeframe. On April 1, 2026, an overhead line failure caused a complete halt of train services to and from Germany, particularly affecting a key detour route for the Hamburg–Berlin railway works. Although services resumed the same day, delays accumulated in the following days and weeks, exacerbated by ongoing infrastructure works throughout the country.

As of now, the rail freight sector is bracing for the impact of this latest disruption, with METRANS predicting significant delays across the entire rail network. The ongoing challenges in maintaining reliable rail operations highlight the need for improved infrastructure and contingency planning to mitigate the effects of such outages in the future.
