Key Sardinia rail link shuttered for 5 months for resilience works

Italian infrastructure manager RFI has initiated a €50 million upgrade on the Chilivani–Porto Torres route, a vital northern link in the standard-gauge network on the island of Sardinia. This project aims to enhance the resilience and reliability of the rail infrastructure.

The upgrade will involve significant works over a five-month period, during which the route will be closed to rail traffic. RFI has stated that the project is essential for improving service quality and safety on this critical corridor.

As part of the upgrade, RFI plans to implement various measures to strengthen the existing infrastructure. This includes reinforcing bridges, upgrading track systems, and enhancing signaling technology to ensure better operational efficiency.

RFI has emphasized the importance of this route for both passenger and freight services, as it connects key economic areas in northern Sardinia. The improvements are expected to facilitate increased capacity and reduce travel times once the works are completed.

Local authorities and stakeholders have been informed about the closure and the anticipated benefits of the upgrade. RFI is working closely with regional transport agencies to minimize disruption and provide alternative travel options during the construction period.

The project is part of RFI’s broader strategy to modernize and enhance the rail network across Italy, focusing on sustainability and improved service delivery. The completion of the Chilivani–Porto Torres upgrade is scheduled for early 2024, with RFI committed to maintaining transparency throughout the process.
