Lazio Signs €160m Deal to Install ERTMS on Rome–Viterbo Line

The Lazio region has finalized a €160 million agreement to implement the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on the Rome–Civita Castellana–Viterbo line. This initiative aims to enhance safety and efficiency on a line that has faced operational challenges due to outdated signaling systems.

The project is part of a broader effort to modernize rail infrastructure in the region, which has been hampered by safety restrictions on single-track sections. These restrictions have resulted in reduced service frequency and capacity, impacting overall passenger experience.

ERTMS is designed to improve train control and management, allowing for better coordination of train movements and increased line capacity. The system will replace the legacy signaling currently in use, which has been a limiting factor in the line’s operational efficiency.

Implementation of the ERTMS is expected to begin in early 2024, with completion targeted for late 2025. The project will involve significant upgrades to trackside equipment and the installation of new onboard systems in trains operating on this line.

In addition to enhancing safety, the modernization is anticipated to reduce travel times and increase the reliability of services. This aligns with Lazio’s broader transportation strategy to promote rail as a sustainable alternative to road travel.

The investment in the Rome–Civita Castellana–Viterbo line reflects a commitment to improving regional rail services and supporting economic growth through enhanced connectivity. Stakeholders are optimistic that the successful implementation of ERTMS will serve as a model for future upgrades across other lines in the region.
