LTG Cargo Cleared for Rail Operations in Germany

Signal

LTG Cargo Polska received certification for independent rail freight operations in Germany as of June 8, 2026.

Impact

positive

This certification benefits LTG Cargo Polska and its customers by reducing intermediary partners, leading to shorter lead times and increased flexibility. Additionally, it strengthens competition in the rail freight market between LTG Cargo and other operators like LDz Cargo.

LTG Cargo, the Lithuanian national rail freight operator, has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining certification for independent rail freight operations in Germany through its subsidiary, LTG Cargo Polska. This certification, announced on June 8, 2026, allows LTG Cargo Polska to operate without intermediaries, enhancing its operational efficiency and market presence.

Laimonas Nekrošius, CEO of LTG Cargo Polska, emphasized that this certification will lead to more effective transport services, particularly between Poland, Ukraine, and the Baltic States. The ability to operate directly in Germany provides a strong impetus for LTG Cargo to expand its services, which Nekrošius identifies as increasingly relevant to their customer base.

The reduction of intermediary partners is expected to streamline operations, resulting in shorter lead times and greater adaptability to market changes. This strategic move aligns with LTG Cargo's broader objective of international expansion, which has been critical in light of the loss of freight from Russia due to sanctions.

In recent years, LTG Cargo has made significant investments in its operations. In 2025, the company purchased new pocket wagons specifically for intermodal operations between Kaunas, Lithuania, and Duisburg, Germany. Furthermore, in 2024, LTG Cargo secured licenses to operate in Latvia and Estonia, thereby extending its reach across the entire Baltic region.

The competitive landscape in the rail freight sector is evolving, with LTG Cargo's expansion efforts positioning it against other regional players, such as LDz Cargo in Latvia. The latter has also been compelled to seek new business opportunities following the sanctions on Russia.

Currently, LTG Cargo Polska employs 130 individuals and operates a fleet comprising over 350 standard-gauge wagons and 20 locomotives. This robust infrastructure will support its new operations in Germany, allowing the company to better serve its customers and respond to the growing demand for rail freight services in Europe.
