positive

Passengers and Metro employees will benefit from improved comfort, while maintenance teams will face increased workloads due to intensified air conditioning checks.

The Madrid Metro has initiated a proactive measure to enhance passenger comfort during the upcoming heat wave by installing 40 cooling units across 20 stations on Lines 1 and 5. This initiative, which began on June 4, 2026, marks the third consecutive year of implementing such measures in response to rising temperatures.

The cooling units will be operational from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. whenever outdoor temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius or when Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) announces a heat wave. The selected stations on Line 1 include Sol, Chamartín, Alvarado, Iglesia, Antón Martín, Estación del Arte, Atocha, Puente de Vallecas, Buenos Aires, and Alto del Arenal. On Line 5, the cooling systems will be installed at Callao, Alonso Martínez, Gran Vía, Chueca, Ópera, Diego de León, Núñez de Balboa, La Latina, Puerta de Toledo, and Acacias.

In addition to the installation of cooling units, Metro de Madrid will enhance its maintenance protocols by intensifying checks on the air conditioning systems of all trains throughout the summer months. In the event of a malfunction, the affected train will be sent for repairs immediately, with a resolution target of one day. To further maintain cooler temperatures inside train cars, the automatic opening of train doors will be disabled during this period, allowing doors to open only when activated by passengers. This strategy aims to minimize the loss of cool air at stations.

The implementation of these cooling units and enhanced maintenance measures reflects a commitment to passenger comfort and operational efficiency. As temperatures rise, these actions will likely improve the overall travel experience for the millions of passengers who rely on the Madrid Metro daily.
