NS CEO Highlights Aging Dutch Rail Infrastructure

The Dutch state-backed operator NS has reported an increase in train operations and passenger numbers for the year, as indicated in its year-end forecast. However, CEO Marjan Rintel has raised concerns regarding the condition of certain sections of the rail infrastructure.

Rintel stated that parts of the rail network are ‘past their sell-by date,’ emphasizing the need for significant investment in infrastructure upgrades. This statement comes as NS prepares for further expansion in services, which is expected to increase demand on the existing rail system.

In 2023, NS operated a total of 1.3 million train services, marking a 5% increase compared to the previous year. This rise in operations has resulted in a corresponding increase in passenger numbers, with NS reporting a total of 300 million passengers carried this year, a 10% increase from 2022.

Despite these positive figures, Rintel pointed out that the aging infrastructure poses challenges for reliability and safety. She noted that certain tracks and signaling systems require urgent attention to meet the growing demands of the rail network.

NS has called for collaboration with the Dutch government and other stakeholders to secure funding for necessary infrastructure improvements. The operator aims to enhance service quality and ensure the sustainability of rail transport in the Netherlands.

Looking ahead, NS plans to introduce new train models and expand its service offerings. The company is also exploring innovative technologies to improve operational efficiency and passenger experience.

As the rail industry continues to evolve, NS remains committed to addressing infrastructure challenges while meeting the needs of its growing customer base.
