Renfe Secures €500m EIB Loan to Renew Catalonia’s Rodalies Fleet
Renfe has announced the acquisition of up to €500 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to modernize its Rodalies suburban and regional fleet in Catalonia. This funding is part of a broader initiative to enhance public transport services in the region.
The loan will be allocated towards the procurement of new trains and the refurbishment of existing rolling stock. The objective is to improve the reliability, efficiency, and comfort of services provided to commuters in Catalonia.
Renfe’s Rodalies network serves a significant number of passengers, with over 100 million journeys recorded annually. The modernization efforts are expected to address the growing demand for efficient public transport solutions in urban and suburban areas.
In addition to the fleet renewal, the project aims to incorporate advanced technologies into the new trains, including energy-efficient systems and enhanced passenger information services. This aligns with Renfe’s commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
The EIB financing is part of a larger investment strategy by Renfe to upgrade its services across Spain, with a focus on improving connectivity and service quality. The company has been actively working on various projects to enhance its infrastructure and rolling stock.
Renfe plans to begin the procurement process for the new trains in the coming months, with the goal of having the updated fleet operational within the next few years. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for passengers in Catalonia.
