positive

The contract impacts Saudi Arabia Railways and local industries by improving freight mobility and reducing transportation costs, facilitating better connectivity between manufacturing centers and logistics facilities.

Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has awarded a significant contract to OHL Arabia and Hassan Allam Construction to extend its freight railway network in the Eastern Province. This project, which involves the construction of a 22.7-kilometre single-track line, aims to enhance the efficiency of freight transportation in the region, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

The awarded contract includes extensive civil and railway construction works, such as earthworks, civil foundations, and track infrastructure. Notably, the project will also involve the construction of two bridges: one measuring 265 meters that crosses a major highway, and another 118 meters long that spans the ARAMCO Pipeline Corridor. Additionally, the joint venture will implement signaling and telecommunications systems to ensure the new railway integrates seamlessly into the existing rail network.

This expansion is crucial for improving access to Dammam Second Industrial City, a key industrial hub in the Kingdom. By enhancing rail connectivity, the project is expected to facilitate increased movement of industrial goods, thereby reducing transportation costs and improving logistics efficiency. This is particularly important as Saudi Arabia seeks to bolster its industrial sector and diversify its economy away from oil dependency.

The urgency of this project is further underscored by geopolitical factors, such as the ongoing tensions in Iran and the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which have prompted SAR to increase container traffic via rail. Freight trains now transport goods from the port of Dammam to other key ports like Jubail, enhancing regional trade routes.

Industry experts, including Philip Delmas from Drewry Supply Chain Advisors, have emphasized the need for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to expedite the development of a long-discussed rail freight corridor, known as the 'Saudi Landbridge'. This proposed corridor would connect Jeddah on the Red Sea to Dammam and Jubail on the Gulf coast, covering approximately 1,500 kilometers and significantly reducing freight transit times.

In summary, the contract awarded to OHL Arabia and Hassan Allam Construction represents a strategic move by Saudi Arabia Railways to enhance its freight capabilities, support industrial growth, and improve logistics efficiency in the Eastern Province.
