Siemens Launches Vectron X with Enhanced Connectivity Features
Signal
Siemens Mobility launched the Vectron X on June 10, 2023, at its new service center in Munich, Germany.
Impact
positiveLeasing companies and freight operators will benefit from improved operational efficiency and reduced downtime, potentially increasing the attractiveness of Vectron locomotives in the European market.
Siemens Mobility introduced the Vectron X locomotive on June 10, 2023, during a ceremony at its newly opened service center in Munich, Germany. This latest iteration of the Vectron series will be delivered to customers starting mid-June, with existing Vectron owners given the option to upgrade their units.
The Vectron X features a new driver control panel equipped with a screen that provides access to dedicated applications and real-time connectivity. This innovation allows for remote operations, including starting and stopping the locomotive, which Siemens claims can save drivers between 7 to 12 minutes per operation, and up to 30 minutes in winter conditions. Such time savings can lead to substantial productivity improvements for operators.
Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, emphasized the shift in locomotive purchasing trends, noting that leasing companies now account for two-thirds of the 3,000 Vectrons sold to date. These companies prefer a standardized platform for operations across Europe, which the Vectron X aims to fulfill.
Siemens is also encouraging third-party developers to create applications for the Vectron X, enhancing its modular digital ecosystem. This initiative builds on the Xcelerator portfolio introduced at InnoTrans 2022, which aims to provide a comprehensive digital solution for rail operators.
In conjunction with the Vectron X launch, Siemens inaugurated a new 2,000 square meter Rail Service Centre at its 10-hectare Allach site in Munich. This facility will increase the capacity for locomotive overhauls from 25 to 80 units annually, significantly improving turnaround times for maintenance and repairs. Elmar Zeiler, CEO of customer services at Siemens Mobility, stated that the digitalized workshop processes will lead to faster and more predictable service visits.
Looking ahead, Siemens indicated that its Vectouro passenger trains, which are designed to be pulled by Vectrons, may also be upgraded to the Vectron X platform, although no timeline has been provided for this enhancement.
