Siemens Signs Deal for Germany’s Second Largest BEMU Fleet
Siemens Mobility has signed a contract to supply 61 battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) for regional rail services in North Rhine-Westphalia, marking a significant development in the electrification of Germany’s rail network.
This contract represents the second-largest fleet of BEMUs in Germany, following a growing trend towards sustainable and environmentally friendly rail transport solutions. The deployment of these units is expected to enhance regional connectivity while reducing carbon emissions.
The BEMUs will be utilized on various routes within North Rhine-Westphalia, a region known for its dense population and extensive rail network. The introduction of battery-electric technology is anticipated to improve operational efficiency and lower energy costs.
Siemens Mobility is committed to advancing the transition to sustainable rail transport. The BEMUs are designed to operate on non-electrified lines, providing flexibility and reducing the need for extensive overhead electrification infrastructure.
The delivery of the units is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the first trains expected to enter service shortly thereafter. This timeline aligns with the regional government’s objectives to enhance public transport options and promote greener travel alternatives.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the new BEMU fleet is expected to contribute to job creation in the region, as local maintenance and support services will be required to ensure the operational readiness of the units.
Siemens Mobility’s investment in this project underscores its role as a leader in the rail industry, particularly in the development of innovative solutions that meet the demands of modern transportation while addressing climate change challenges.
