SNCB Orders First 180 CAF Trains in €3.4 Billion Fleet Renewal

Belgium’s national rail operator SNCB has officially initiated the first phase of its AM30 fleet renewal program by placing a firm order for 180 trains from CAF. This order marks a significant step in a broader €3.4 billion contract aimed at modernizing the SNCB fleet.

The contract, often referred to as the ‘contract of a century,’ encompasses a total of 1,000 trains, which will be delivered over the coming years. The initial order of 180 trains is expected to enhance service quality and operational efficiency for SNCB.

CAF, a Spanish manufacturer, will provide the trains designed to meet the latest standards in passenger comfort and energy efficiency. The first units are anticipated to enter service in 2025, with subsequent deliveries scheduled to follow.

In related news, Alstom, another key player in the rail industry, has announced job cuts as part of its restructuring efforts. The company is facing challenges in meeting production targets and adapting to the evolving market demands.

Alstom’s decision to reduce its workforce comes amid increased competition and the need for operational efficiency. The exact number of positions affected has not been disclosed, but the company aims to streamline its operations to better align with current market conditions.

Both developments highlight the dynamic nature of the rail industry in Europe, where operators and manufacturers are continuously adapting to technological advancements and shifting market demands.
