On June 4, 2026, the UK marked a pivotal advancement in its rail infrastructure with the inauguration of its first electrified rail test track at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Center in Warwickshire. This facility, developed by Porterbrook, represents a significant investment of over GBP 75 million (EUR 89 million) and spans 135 acres, positioning itself as one of the most advanced rail testing facilities in Europe.
British Minister of Rail Transport Peter Hendy officiated the opening ceremony, emphasizing the importance of such innovations in building a future-ready railway. The event attracted key figures from the rail industry, including Porterbrook CEO Mary Grant, Network Rail apprentices, and students engaged in rail-focused educational programs.
The new 3.5-kilometer electrified track will facilitate the testing of rolling stock and cutting-edge railway technologies. This initiative is expected to accelerate the introduction of more efficient and sustainable solutions within the British rail network, directly impacting train manufacturers and service operators.
Porterbrook's commitment to modernization is evident, having invested over GBP 1 billion (EUR 1.2 billion) in the past five years. This includes funding for new trains, modernization of the existing fleet, and the development of alternative traction technologies. Notably, Porterbrook has allocated over GBP 14 million (EUR 16.7 million) for the development and testing of HydroFLEX, the UK’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train.
The electrified test track is not only a milestone for Porterbrook but also serves as a platform for collaboration among various stakeholders in the rail sector. The facility aims to support the entire rail industry, demonstrating how private investments can drive modernization efforts in the UK rail system.
In conjunction with the track's inauguration, Porterbrook unveiled a new visual identity that reflects its ongoing commitment to innovation and collaboration with industry partners. This strategic move is likely to enhance Porterbrook's market position and attract further investments in rail technology.
