Turkey and Saudi Arabia sign railway co-operation and Hedjaz corridor

On June 9, 2023, Turkey's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Adil Karaismailoğlu, and Saudi Arabia's Minister of Transport, Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, formalized a series of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing railway cooperation between the two nations. The agreements focus on railway technology, infrastructure development, and long-term connectivity, with a particular emphasis on the revival of the historic Hedjaz Railway corridor.

The Hedjaz Railway, originally constructed in the early 20th century, connected Istanbul to Medina, facilitating pilgrimage and trade. The revival of this corridor could significantly enhance trade routes and passenger travel between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, as well as through Syria and Jordan. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify its economy and improve infrastructure.

Railway technology firms and infrastructure developers stand to benefit from this collaboration. The agreements may lead to increased investments in railway projects, creating opportunities for companies specializing in rail construction, signaling, and maintenance. Additionally, the revival of the Hedjaz Railway could stimulate tourism, particularly for religious pilgrimages, thereby impacting the hospitality sector in both countries.
