Battery Trains for the Railway Network in Northern Westphalia

The Westphalia-Lippe transport authority (Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe – NWL) has placed an order for 61 Mireo Plus B battery trains from Siemens Mobility. This decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance sustainable transportation options within the region.

The Mireo Plus B trains are designed to operate on non-electrified tracks, utilizing battery technology to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. This aligns with NWL’s commitment to transitioning towards greener transport solutions.

Siemens Mobility is set to deliver the first units of the Mireo Plus B trains by 2024. The deployment of these trains is expected to significantly improve service reliability and passenger comfort across the railway network in northern Westphalia.

The battery trains will be integrated into existing services, providing a flexible and efficient alternative to traditional diesel-powered trains. This move is anticipated to contribute to the reduction of noise pollution and enhance the overall travel experience for commuters.

In addition to environmental benefits, the introduction of the Mireo Plus B trains is expected to support regional economic growth by improving connectivity and accessibility within northern Westphalia.

Overall, this order represents a significant step forward in the modernization of the railway infrastructure in the region, reinforcing NWL’s strategic objectives for sustainable public transport.
