China Continues Silk Road Rail Project in Serbia

Construction on the first high-speed railway built by China in Europe is set to commence in Serbia in November 2023. This project is part of China’s broader Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at enhancing connectivity between Asia and Europe.

The railway will connect the Serbian capital, Belgrade, with the city of Novi Sad, significantly reducing travel time between the two locations. The distance of approximately 80 kilometers is expected to be covered in under 30 minutes once the railway is operational.

The project is being executed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company. The total investment for the railway is estimated at €1.5 billion, with funding primarily sourced from Chinese loans.

In addition to improving passenger transport, the railway is anticipated to facilitate freight movement, thereby boosting trade and economic development in the region. The project aligns with Serbia’s strategic goals to enhance its infrastructure and attract foreign investment.

Construction is expected to create thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly, contributing to local economies. The Serbian government has expressed strong support for the initiative, viewing it as a critical component of the country’s modernization efforts.

Once completed, the high-speed railway will be a significant milestone in Serbia’s transportation network and a key link in the broader Silk Road economic corridor.
