Momentum Building for Hedjaz Railway Revival

The revival of the Hedjaz railway is gaining traction as Turkey and Saudi Arabia formalized their commitment through signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). This initiative aims to re-establish a direct rail connection between the two nations, which historically linked the Ottoman Empire to the Arabian Peninsula.

On October 15, 2023, Turkey's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, and Saudi Arabia's Minister of Transport, Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, signed the MoUs during a bilateral meeting in Ankara. This agreement marks a significant step towards enhancing regional connectivity and fostering economic ties.

Syria and Jordan have also expressed their support for the project, indicating a broader regional interest in revitalizing this historic railway. The Hedjaz railway originally opened in 1908, facilitating trade and pilgrimage routes, particularly for Muslim pilgrims traveling to Mecca.
