The King of Denmark Inaugurates Country’s First Battery Trains

On 19 December 2025, His Majesty King Frederik of Denmark officially inaugurated the country’s first battery-powered trains. This event marks a significant milestone in Denmark’s commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions in the rail sector.

The new battery trains, developed by Siemens Mobility, are designed to operate on non-electrified tracks, providing a flexible and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional diesel locomotives. The trains are equipped with advanced battery technology that allows for efficient energy storage and usage, enabling them to travel significant distances without the need for overhead electrification.

During the inauguration ceremony, King Frederik emphasized the importance of innovation in the transportation sector and its role in achieving Denmark’s climate goals. He stated, “The introduction of battery trains is a crucial step towards a greener future for our railways and demonstrates our commitment to sustainable development.”

The battery trains will initially operate on several regional routes, with plans for expansion based on performance and demand. The Danish government has allocated funding to support the rollout of this technology, aiming to enhance the overall efficiency of the rail network.

In addition to reducing emissions, the implementation of battery trains is expected to lower operational costs for rail operators. The trains require less maintenance compared to diesel engines and can be charged during off-peak hours, optimizing energy use.

As part of the broader initiative, Denmark is also investing in the necessary infrastructure to support battery charging stations along key routes. This infrastructure development is crucial for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of battery train operations.

The introduction of battery trains in Denmark is part of a larger trend across Europe, where several countries are exploring alternative propulsion technologies to enhance sustainability in rail transport. With this inauguration, Denmark positions itself as a leader in the transition to greener rail solutions.
