Turkiye’s HSR Network Expands with Bursa Connection

Signal

Turkiye's high-speed rail project will connect Bursa to Ankara and Istanbul, reducing travel times to 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Impact

positive

The completion of the Bursa–Osmaneli section will benefit commuters and freight operators, enhancing connectivity and logistics in the region.

Turkiye is rapidly advancing its high-speed rail (HSR) network, with the Bursa–Osmaneli section nearing completion. This project is part of a broader initiative to expand the national HSR network to 6,000 kilometers by 2035. The Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, confirmed that the final phase of construction is underway, with the goal of completing this segment by the end of 2026.

The new line will integrate Bursa into the national high-speed rail network for the first time, providing direct connections to major cities such as Ankara and Istanbul. Once operational, travel times will be significantly reduced to approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, a substantial improvement over current road travel times.

The Bandırma–Bursa–Yenişehir–Osmaneli project spans a total length of 201 kilometers and is designed for speeds of up to 250 km/h. Turkish authorities estimate that the infrastructure will accommodate 30 million passengers annually and transport 59 million tons of freight. This enhancement in rail capacity is expected to strengthen the role of rail transport in both passenger mobility and logistics.

Currently, the project is in its final stages, with earthworks, tunnels, and engineering structures completed. The railway superstructure work is ongoing, and the Osmaneli–Bursa section is set for completion in the latter half of 2026. Additionally, the segment extending westward through Teknosab, Karacabey, Dağkadı, and Kuşcenneti is projected to be finished by 2028.

This expansion is strategically significant for Turkiye, as it will create a vital high-speed rail link between the industrial and port regions of the Sea of Marmara and the country's main economic centers. The improved connectivity is likely to attract more businesses and enhance economic activities in the region.
