UITP Launches World Public Transport Day

On October 10, 2023, the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) officially launched World Public Transport Day in New York City. This initiative coincides with the commencement of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport, aimed at promoting sustainable mobility solutions globally.

The event gathered industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of public transport and its role in achieving sustainability goals. UITP emphasized the importance of public transport in reducing carbon emissions and enhancing urban mobility.

During the launch, UITP presented several key initiatives designed to encourage cities worldwide to invest in sustainable transport systems. These initiatives include promoting electric and hybrid vehicles, enhancing public transport infrastructure, and increasing accessibility for all users.

UITP Secretary General, Mohamed Mezghani, highlighted the significance of collaboration among public transport authorities, private operators, and local governments to create effective and sustainable transport networks. He stated, “Public transport is not just a service; it is a vital component of urban life and a key player in the fight against climate change.”

The launch of World Public Transport Day is expected to serve as a catalyst for discussions and actions aimed at improving public transport systems globally. UITP encourages stakeholders to participate in events and activities that promote the benefits of public transport throughout the year.

As part of the ongoing efforts, UITP will also release a series of reports and guidelines to assist cities in developing sustainable transport policies. These resources will focus on best practices, innovative technologies, and funding strategies to enhance public transport services.

World Public Transport Day is set to become an annual event, with UITP planning to expand its reach and impact in the coming years. The organization aims to engage more cities and transport authorities to join the movement towards sustainable public transport solutions.
